Personally, I think they’re all great, but I’d have to go in this order:

    Howland
    Calipari
    Williams
    Self

  2. Doogan says:

Man, hard to even say. Like you said, they’re all really good. I would go Howland at the top, but I also just think it depends on the team. I’d rather have Williams coaching UNC than Howland, and vice versa. I’d probably put Calipari fourth.

  3. Rob Smith says:

Calipari is fourth only because he’s Chaney’s bitch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51-4sJTf7iQ

Howland is top notch – starting with NAU, then Pitt, and now UCLA, he turns programs around. He is a good recruiter, but at the same time he has only had a very few NBAers throughout his time (Brandin Knight, Trevor Ariza, and Jordan Farmar are the only ones I can think of). He knows what to do with the players he has and succeed in different environments.

Williams would be next. I saw him at a Nike clinic two years ago and he talked about his up-tempo style, which I’ve really enjoyed throughout the years – no one else knows how to do this better, including the Phoenix Suns (I can only imagine Steve Nash in a Williams system); however, at least to me, he comes off really arrogant about his system as well. This is his downfall and it has shown in his inability to win many more titles when he’s had the best talent team on the court.

Self is okay. Not sold on him, especially since my roommate from college was a huge Illini fan, so I despise anybody that went there/coached there.

I think there are better coaches out there – I’ll continue to argue for Bobby Knight any day of the week (I know few will agree), even if he’s just at the studio nowadays.

  4. Doogan says:

Yeah, I can see the Williams arrogance thing because his rationale is basically, “I have the best players, so I want there to be as many possessions as possible in a game, because then there’s less chance of the inferior opponent getting lucky and beating me”. And he’s right in that thinking, but it’s hard to have that stance and not sound at least a little arrogant.
